It’s pretty chilly here but the sun was shining most of the day and all the cruisers are making plans to move on. Yesterday, we and our “hurricane hole buddies” spent the day bringing in excess dock lines and anchors. There were tangled anchor chains and lines that needed to be brought in strategically to untangle the web we had all woven to keep us safe during the storm.
This morning one of our boats set out down the ICW and the rest of us discussed weather, the possible condition of the waterway, and when we planned to push on. We are all anxious to take the next step in our journeys and to find warmer weather. It’s such a small community and we’re all heading the same way so it’s likely we’ll meet again.
Jeff and I had a slight mishap yesterday. While dealing with our dock lines we accidentally knocked our spare anchor off a holder on the stern rail and sent it straight to the bottom. Next, we borrowed a little anchor from a neighbor and used it to try and drag for our anchor. Guess what happens next….we proceed to lose the anchor we had borrowed. After some extreme frustration we began to see the irony of the situation and started laughing. We decided to hire a diver to try to retrieve the anchors. The good news is that by losing a second anchor we immediately cut our retrieval cost per anchor in half!
The diver was able to find our anchor which was the most expensive one so all is well. Just couldn’t find the one we borrowed. Oh well, we owe Jeff and Karen a new one for their dinghy.
This afternoon we transitioned to a marina near by so we can fill the water tanks and connect to electricity. We’ll stay here a day or two to get reorganized then be on our way into the ICW and through Great Dismal Swamp.
We truly appreciated all of the concern and encouragement we received from everyone over the past few days, thanks for being there for us through Sandy! We hope everyone fared well through all the wild weather and hope things are beginning to settle down everywhere. We’ll try to keep up on our posts but hopefully there won’t be too much excitement for a while.
Yep – I too have a new understanding of the term ” hurricane hole”!
You learn something new everyday. I never knew why a bar down here was called Hurricane Hole. Now I get it!!
