Making Tracks

After a pleasant 4 hour trip from Oriental, we arrived in Morehead City NC yesterday.  We are docked at the Portside Marina where we had arranged to have some packages delivered.

Just after we tied up, we met our neighbors Paul and Cathy living on a beautiful Southerly 57.   Paul and Cathy had arranged to borrow a car and were making a grocery run and offered to take us along.   We jumped at the gracious offer and were able to get all our provisioning done in one fell swoop.

Chris and Ed, our Jefferson Beach friends on Freedom pulled in later in the afternoon and the 6 of us decided to go out for dinner.

The weather has been quite cold, often wet, and we feel really feel like we are wearing out our welcome this far north.  Since the weather is forecasted to be quite good over the next few days, we have decided to head out to the Atlantic and make some tracks south.  We plan to roughly parallel the coast and sail for as many days as the weather holds.   If we make the distance, we will come ashore at a Florida location.

We will be out of phone and internet range while we are offshore, but we will be checking in to the Maritime Marine Net via our long range radio.  The Net will update our location for a tracking website each time we check in.  To see our last reported position you can search on our call sign KK4LYX at ShipTrak.org.   KK4LYX is our amateur radio call sign and you enter the call sign in a search box on the upper left of the page.  Although we plan to check in each day, long range radio can be difficult so you should not be concerned it you do not see an update.

We could be out until about Wednesday of next week if the weather stays fine.  Otherwise, we will duck in somewhere and let you all know where we are.

Should be a good passage.  We’ll see you in Florida!

Love ya.

    Thanks for your reply, Jeff.
    Good timing with Sandy!

Your time in the Caribbean should be fantastic if you have the time to wait for safe weather.

Shall attempt to figure out the internet system for updates

    Regards,

    Mal Grigg

PS Still remember those great white rum drinks!!!

    Dear Jeff and Mary,
My niece Charlotte Parker told me of your adventure as I also have done some sailing in the Great Lakes, South Africa, Australia and Scotland. Did one trip from Glasgow through the Panama Canal about 30 years ago. Still get out on Sydney Harbour occasionally. If you can put me on your “send list” I would be pleased to be informed.
Hope you got to Florida before “Sandy” arrived.
    Good Luck and safe sailing.

    Regards,

    Mal Grigg malgrigg@gmail.com

      Hi Mal,

Welcome aboard. Charlotte wrote to tell me about me. We were in Portsmouth VA for Sandy and just caught the south end of it.

On the right side of the Echo page there is a spot where you can subscribe to updates.

      Jeff
