Road Trip in Puerto Rico

After a fun “Full Moon” get-together last Thursday at the marina, we took a quick road trip to see a few of the sights.  Just want to make sure to post these before Detroit.  There were actually quite a few people at the party, I just didn’t take very many pictures. It’s a fun group here, mostly the owners and crew of charter boats. There were so many great foods to sample, those charter chefs are accustomed to preparing amazing meals for their guests. Cooking is much more basic here on Echo.

El Younque Rain Forest

Since El Younque (pronounced Junkay) is a national park, their main enterance and visitor center had been closed due to the government shutdown.  They reopened Thursday so we took the opportunity to visit and were lucky to have dry clear weather, not often the case in a rain forest.  It is a beautiful place and we may visit again.

Aricebo Observatory

This is a really cool place to visit – if you’re into this kind of stuff which Jeff certainly is.  The very well done and staffed with very knowledgable people and the telescope itself is quite impressive.  It was the first of it’s kind and built in the 1960’s with a few recent upgrades and remains an important asset to the scientific community.

The town of Rincon is a popular tourist and surfing destination.  We just wandered around a bit one morning and would like to stop in again if we have an opportunity.

La Ruta Panoramica

We traveled a bit of this route which takes you into the mountains where you see a completly different side of Puerto Rico.  Very challenging driving and navigating but worth it.  We saw beautiful vistas along with coffee and banana plantations.

It was somewhat of a whirlwind trip with so much more to see, Puerto Rico is a beautiful island.

Bruce has home movies (8mm) of a family outing to the El Younque rain forest when his dad was stationed in Puerto Rico with the Coast Guard in the 1930’s.
