Down the Hudson to the Sea

Sorry it has been so long without an update.

Monday morning we left Waterford after a pleasant couple of days and started down the Hudson.  One last lock at Troy NY and we entered the Tidal region of the river.  From here on we have the new (for us) complication of 2 tides each day and the associated currents.  The original Native name for the Hudson meant “river that flows both ways.”  For the next 150 miles to the sea, the Hudson flows in and out with each tide.

First stop was for a short visit to Albany and a walk to see the Capital.  We took a tour of the building and it was quite impressive.  After a couple of hot dogs from a street vendor, we got back aboard and continued south.

We spent the night in a little town called Castleton.  The town was pretty quiet.  Well, really quiet.   They had some mooring balls available for $5 per night so we took advantage and tied up for the night.

Next day we were up early and continued down to the spot where we could put our mast back where it belongs and become a sailboat once again.  The marina was called Hop O Nose and they did a great job with hoisting the mast and getting it into position.  After a long day, and half of another, we were all back together and on our way.

Next day we motored to Hyde Park and took a mooring ball for the night.  At this location is one of the Vanderbilt Mansions.  We took a ranger guided tour and learned quite a bit.  Wow, that family had some dough.  At one time they had 1 of ever 25 dollars in the U.S.  Now that’s a wealth distribution problem.

Another day on the River with lots of beautiful scenery.  Motored right by West Point.  Very impressive.  Overnight on the anchor at Crotin Bay.

Next stop NYC!  Will update soon.
